To some, watching television is a mere pastime that offers an escape from reality.
To me, it is now a ritualistic act of preparing for a position behind-the-scenes—Screenwriter.
Although I have been writing for more than half my life, I have always sought growth and advancement as it pertains to my love for words. I initially became aware of my desire to create visual experiences while growing my audience as a self-published Author. I’d accumulated years’ worth of binge-watched content and suddenly felt the urge to pursue a newfound passion. Firsthand practice with channel surfing and countless hours of being glued to the tube may have aptly qualified me for the transition, but I knew that formal training was necessary.
So, for 12 consecutive months, I enrolled in Full Sail University’s MFA screenwriting program, which introduced me to every component associated with the craft. I developed characters, studied plot points, composed acts, digested and applied criticism; reworked ideas and thoroughly executed each concept I was taught. However, it wasn’t until I attended the American Black Film Festival in 2016 that I recognized a dire need for diverse representation surrounding all angles of the camera that captures the script-to-screen process.
As I listened to industry professionals explain the inner-workings of a television show, their insight fueled me. Today, the persistent urge remains too crucial to ignore. Writing for television would fulfill the purpose of my existence and allow me to excel on a level that is unmatched when compared to any other previous occupation, while simultaneously impacting the world, one viewer, one dreamer, one soul at a time.
